Another superhit design to celebrate  

In the year 2010, I hit a monumental milestone by designing PayPal's first generation mobile app for iPhone 3G/3GS. My designed application was the then-new Send Money app, which came at a time when smartphone sales surpassed 172.4 million units in 2009*, and consumers worldwide were expected to spend $119 billion** by 2015 through their mobile phones. PayPal mobile transactions had increased nearly six-fold, from $25 million in 2008 to $141 million in 2009.

PayPal released the iPhone app, which introduces a number of new features. Most interesting was the integration of the “bump to communicate” feature first introduced by the Bump app (which you might remember as the billionth download from the App Store). The PayPal app allows you to send money to another person by simply entering an amount and gently “bumping” your iPhone against theirs.       

The app also came with several fewer physical updates and additions, including a pleasant look and feel, the ability to use more of PayPal’s features (such as requesting and withdrawing money), and a “Split the Check” function that automatically calculates tips, split a bill, and requests payment from each of your dinner companions’ for their share.
